Oral culture and inclusive society

Oral culture is an inclusive communal system that engages the currency of communication (arts, culture, design and creativity), mutually understandable by all members of the community. Traditional African culture imbibes an inclusive society in which the community is one big family, responsibilities and resources are shared, and everyone is appreciated. With pluralities and differences respected, reflecting the concept of Ubuntu, an African philosophy on the interconnection of humanity and inclusive community. The practicality of this concept is demonstrated in the talking drums and their importance as an inclusive communication medium of artistic design and cultural creativity.

The workshop will combine music and narratives to discuss the concept of oral culture, and how it equips us with perspectives and tools to live with differences in society. Through interactive activities on the talking drums, oral genres and stories, we learn from the beautiful traditions in Africa and how cultural practices can bridge social gaps. Participants will take home fragments of experience and knowledge of living in mixed (intergenerational, intercultural, intersectional) inclusive communities.

Workshop facilitation by dr. Olupemi Oludare, held in English.
