6 x Technology for a better world

We are faced with global challenges when it comes to sustainability, health and safety. Design plays an important role in finding the right solutions. This is also reflected in the exhibitions of the World Design Embassies in Dutch Design Week 2022. Here are the six must-sees:

1. A nerve-wracking VR experience

MessLess is an extraordinary virtual reality (VR) installation that takes you into the world of young people in Amsterdam South-East. As a visitor, you will find yourself in a virtual reality face-off during which you will be tempted to reach for a weapon. You will experience what choices and courses of action young people have in such a situation.

Would you like to know what you would do if you had to make a decision in a split second? Find out at the Embassy of Safety exhibition in the Klokgebouw at Strijp-S.

2. Pregnancy care for all mothers

A large proportion of infant deaths in the womb or during childbirth can be prevented through high-quality healthcare during pregnancy. Philips is committed to providing good care for mothers around the world. The multinational does this through various projects.

In the Netherlands, for example, the company is working on an app for reporting pregnancy symptoms. This is linked to an algorithm and a dashboard. This allows healthcare providers to detect risks early and intervene in time. In the Sub-Saharan region, Philips is working on a High-Risk Pregnancy Toolkit that includes informative pregnancy charts and a two-headed fetoscope.

You will find more information about the projects in the exhibition of the Embassy of Health in the Klokgebouw at Strijp-S.

3. Deeply personal vending machine

What if a confectionery vending machine could provide not only unhealthy snacks but also nutritionally balanced products? Designers Tom Schouw and Sjoerd Legué have developed a vending machine that provides personalized nutritional advice based on data. You stand in front of the camera, the device takes a number of measurements, and then you receive a product that fits your physical and mental needs at that moment.

Are you wondering what the device will serve to you? Take a look at the exhibition of the Embassy of Food in the Klokgebouw at Strijp-S.

4. Surprising conversation partners

How often do you strike up a conversation with people who have a different opinion from your own? In the CIVINC project, designers Ruben Treurniet and Leon Horbach are developing an online tool to bring people with opposing views into contact with each other. It shows that mutual understanding and trust can grow when you exchange ideas with each other.

During the conference of the Embassy of Safety on 26 October, visitors can give their anonymous opinion about safety dilemmas. If you’re interested in participating, keep an eye on the Embassy of Safety website.

5. Your o(w)n demand t-shirt

An additional must-see, on top of World Design Embassies’ exhibitions, is Atalyé. The designers at Atalyé make clothes that really fit. How? By combining craft and technology. The designers create tailor-made clothing by means of 3D body scanning, automatic pattern drawing software and an automatic cutting machine. In this way, Atalyé wants to show that on-demand clothing production is possible, scalable and affordable.

If you would like to know more about this, there is a live demonstration in the Klokgebouw every day between 13:00 and 15:00 hrs.

6. A new vision on health data

Health data plays an essential role in the shift to more preventive care. That’s why AMS-IX (the Amsterdam Internet Exchange) proposes a new, open, transparent, and privacy-friendly way of data exchange. Design studio De Reuringsdienst has built an interactive installation called the Data Donor Club in which you can experience this. What choices do you make about your data?

You can experience this project in the Embassy of Health in the Klokgebouw at Strijp-S.
