Feeling for living with a mental disability

Type Project
Project
Precious Burden

Having a mental disability is tough and it is very difficult to deal with it in your daily life without the support and compassion of those around you. How easy or difficult life with a mental disability is, therefore depends to a large extent on the understanding and actions of others.

Too often people with a mental disability are not really understood in our society. By sharing knowledge and insights, Asefeh Tayebani, herself a designer with autism, wants to make a positive contribution as much as possible and help people who deal with disabilities.

With her objects, Tayebani offers a glimpse into life with autism. She is convinced that this work will enable herself, and perhaps others with a mental disability, to feel that they matter. To see that their disability is not a ‘box’ they have to hide in.

About

The work of Asefeh Tayebani (1987) often deals with difficult topics. She subtly dissects these issues and approaches them with critical, tactile sensitivity. On the one hand Tayebani considers jewelry as aesthetic objects and as carriers of messages on the other. The common thread through her work is the focus on sharing personal experiences and communicating needs. With her objects, Tayebani tries to make the invisible visible, and to show that which too often remains underexposed.
