Research into the sensory translation of art

Haptic room studies #1: procelain membrane wall and #3 conversation piece

These architectural interventions for spaces where artworks are exhibited combines elements of The OtherAbilities’ long-running artistic research into the ‘sensory translation’ of visual and performance art, such as converting the sound of a film or a piece of music into a tactile experience.

The work explores the art experience and the inclusion of a sensory diverse audience. Temporarily installed floors, walls, etcetera with built-in sensory translation technology invite the audience to listen with their bodies and relate to art in a new way.

Accessibility must also mean inclusiveness: all people must be able to experience the rich, conflicting, and personal sides of art. Everyone should be able to participate in the social and intellectual exchange that art provokes. Special tours and wearable technology alone don’t make art spaces more inclusive. That’s why The OtherAbilities focus their attention on redesigning the architecture of art spaces, offering tools that benefit both the hearing and non-hearing public.

About The OtherAbilities

The OtherAbilities was founded in 2019 by artist Adi Hollander and contemporary art historian Eva Fotiadi (PhD). OtherAbilities investigates the implications, possibilities and feasibility of sensory translation within the domains of art, design and technology. The initiative acts as a hub for experimental and interdisciplinary research projects focusing on multi-sensory art and sharing art with a wider audience. Haptic Room Studies is a collaboration of Adi Hollander, Andreas Tegnander, Eva Fotiadi, Ildikó Horvath, Sungeun Lee and Yonatan Cohen.
