Embassy of Safety conferentie
At the Embassy, we make trust and rely on creators. Trust is important for a well-functioning society. In a society where people trust each other, there is more cooperation and people are more likely to help each other. Which in turn ensures a good socio-cultural climate and a well-functioning economy. Strengthening trust is “key” in many security issues, such as online crime, undermining and polarisation. During Dutch Design Week 2022, the Embassy will show how society becomes safer by relying on making power.

At the Embassy of Safety, we all work as makers of a safe society. We believe that change must take place within people, from a sense of ownership. Only then can we ensure systemic change and safe society. As security makers, we are not all designers or artists. Precisely also as professionals employed by security organisations, we believe we can enable a different way of dealing with security issues.
What to expect
In the conference, we explore the ethical dilemmas of online content. Where is the boundary of what we consider permissible? How can you collaborate without violating privacy laws. When should you intervene? How can you return confiscated goods and money from criminals to society in a meaningful way? Between dissenters and also in the relationship between police and citizens, we see increasing polarisation and hardening in society. How can this be countered? What conditions are needed for fruitful cooperation between designers and security professionals? How can more space for this be created in the systemic world of security organisations?
This conference features creators from various organisations. They enthuse with inspiring design projects, share insights from scientific research, talk about working mechanisms, and engage in a conversation with each other and the audience about making. With contributions from: Danish Design Center, Association of Dutch Municipalities, SIDN fund, Greenberry, Municipality of Amsterdam, Civinc, Atelier Yuri Veerman, Social Design Police, Studio Sociaal Centraal, Province of North Brabant, Taskforce-RIEC Brabant-Zeeland, TUDelft, Ministry of Justice and Security, Reclassering NL, the Public Prosecution Service and other makers from the security sector. Tabo Goudswaard, curator of the Embassy moderates the discussion.
